Microsoft Peaks

First of all, for those who have (rightfully) accused me of being over the top in my respect and admiration for Linux, let me reassure you that today’s FamilyFirst offering is not a Linux gush.
Microsoft has peaked. Their dominance of the desktop is at its pinnacle. I fearlessly predict that a year from today, it will not own as high a percentage of the consumer OS market as it does at this very minute.
The reason is that Vista is by far the most intrusive, the most cantankerous, and the most resource-intensive operating system that they have ever produced. And odds are whatever comes next will be everything that is bad about Vista, and worse.

The reason is that Microsoft has shown a strong inclination to put its own interests ahead of those of its customers.
For instance, take the WGA tool. It is installed by default on XP via automatic updates. If you are smarter than the average user, you can turn down its installation. But most people approve any and all updates, because updating your Windows system is essential to keep the steady stream of security vulnerabilities under control, and who has time to inspect every update?
So, you end up with a piece of crapware on your system that does you ABSOLUTELY NO GOOD. Instead, it alerts Microsoft in case the software deems your system to be pirated.
And its accuracy leaves much to be desired. Tech forums are full of stories of users who tested falsely positive for Pirated XP and can no longer download many program updates from Microsoft.
And, according to today’s FamilyFirst pick, a Lockergnome article about two updates released for Vista that have been clamored for for months. The part that convinces me that Microsoft will play less and less a part in home computers? The fact that the clueless clods make you VALIDATE YOUR VISTA SYSTEM before you can install the updates!
Wait a minute, wasn’t Vista supposed to be uncrackable? SO WHY PUT CUSTOMERS THROUGH A PROCESS THAT IS SO ANNOYING??
So here’s to Microsoft, who definitely benefited the home computer business by establishing the DOD/Windows standard for software development, but who has let the lust for profits and disregard for customers cause them to begin to lose their home PC dominance.
